Oral health FAQ

When should my child first visit the dentist?

Children should see a dentist within six months of the first tooth’s eruption, usually around their first birthday. This establishes a dental home and prevents dental problems.

When should i start brushing my child’s teeth?

Before any teeth erupt, gently wipe your child’s gums with a clean cloth after each feeding. Once the first tooth erupts, you can brush with a soft toothbrush twice a day.

What are the best snacks to prevent cavities?

Snacks that make your mouth increase saliva are the best for your teeth as they help rinse the teeth while you are eating. Good snacks are crunchy fruits and vegetables, cheese and nuts. Water is always the drink of choice!

How often should my child visit the dentist?

Check-ups are recommended every 6 months to prevent cavities and other dental issues, however, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits based on your child’s oral health needs.

Should I use toothpaste?

A toothbrush and water should be sufficient until your child can spit (usually 2.5 to 3 years of age), unless your child is at a high risk of cavities in which a dentist may recommend a fluoridated toothpaste.

Are baby teeth important?

Yes! Baby teeth are important for your child’s growth and development. Primary teeth help with speech, chewing and maintaining space for the eruption of adult teeth. If a cavity remains untreated, it can cause pain, infection, swelling and may lead to tooth loss. It is important to detect and fill cavities right away!
